Directories
Massachusetts Directory of Recycled Products Manufacturers (Updated
2003)
The companies listed in
this directory are limited to those that alter recyclable material beyond the basic
sorting, crushing or baling involved in processing materials for many end markets. These
companies either:
- manufacture a new
product for sale directly to consumers or other manufacturers (paper mills, compost
companies, foundries, artisans);
- remanufacture or
recondition products for resale (toner cartridges, computers);
- transform a raw
material to a feedstock for a specific market (plastic pellets, paper pulp); and/or
- fabricate products
from recycled materials (backyard composters, fleece outerwear.)
The Chelsea Center
has attempted to include as many manufacturers in this guide as possible. However, it is
important to note that this is not the universe of businesses in Massachusetts that use
scrap materials as feedstock. There are many categories of companies that, due to their
sheer numbers, are not fully represented in this directory, such as thrift shops,
furniture and appliance repair shops, materials processors, and scrap yards, artists, and
clothing and accessory designers/manufacturers. The almost 200 public entities that run
their own compost operations are also not included in this guide, although they can
certainly be considered recyclers. In addition, virtually any company that manufactures as
item out of steel is making a recycled product; it would be impossible to identify and
include them all. This document reflects only a small portion of the enormous scope
of activity in materials recycling and reuse occurring in the Commonwealth.
You may view a listing of the manufacturers listed in our
"Massachusetts Directory of Recycled Products Manufacturers" by manufacturer, types of recycled materials used, product
type, or by city/town.
The Chelsea
Center wishes to acknowledge the US EPA Region 1 for its contribution to the production of
this Directory.
Massachusetts Guide to Services for the Recycling Industry (Updated
2003)
This publication
is designed to inform technical, financial, and economic development service providers,
and those seeking assistance from them, about the resources available in Massachusetts to
new and expanding businesses working on all aspects of recycling, particularly
manufacturing. This assistance may include business plan review, financing, referrals to
additional sources of information, technical assistance in identifying and maximizing the
use of recycled feedstock, materials sourcing, identifying and obtaining required permits,
tax credit opportunities, setting up recycling programs, and others.
The organizations listed in this directory represent, for the most part, state and federal
agencies, public and private universities, colleges and community colleges and
not-for-profit entities that cover a large region of or the whole state, and that provide
a range of technical and business services to new or expanding companies. Those included
represent only a small portion of available resources.
You may view a listing of the service providers listed in our
"Massachusetts Guide to Services for the Recycling Industry" by agency or by service provided.
The Chelsea Center
wishes to acknowledge the MA Departmental of Environmental Protection for its contribution
to the production of this Directory.
2001 Directory of Testing Laboratories for the Recycling Industry
The Directory of
Testing Laboratories for the Recycling Industry is intended to serve as an information
resource for manufacturers, individuals and organizations working in the recycling
industry. The Directory can be used as a reference tool to find and contact experts in
materials and products testing and is organized so that the user can easily locate a
laboratory according to type of testing needed or material being used. The more than 200
organizations listed provide services and testing for many kinds of materials and are
divided into three sections as follows:
- Private Laboratories
- Federal Laboratories
- University Research Centers
Private Laboratories offer their expertise on a fee-for-service basis. These labs
provide expertise on specific materials, technologies, or applications.
Federal Laboratories perform research on materials or technologies that may be
applicable to technology needs in manufacturing with recycled materials. Although the
research in these laboratories may not always be directed at commercial technologies, it
may provide vital information on materials characteristics or technologies in development.
University Research Centers perform basic and applied research involving the analysis
or characterization of plastics, wood products, and other commonly recycled materials.
The Private and Federal Laboratory listings include brief descriptions of material and
product expertise, specialties and testing. The University Research Center listings
include brief descriptions of their services.

Recycling-Based Community Economic Development Reports
Recycling-based
community economic development (RBED) is the process of creating jobs that pay livable
wages, promoting environmentally sound economic growth, and raising the standard of living
and quality of life through the use and reuse of recovered materials generated in a town
or region. Below are reports created from grants awarded through the Chelsea Center.

The Strategic Plan for
Recycling Market Development
The Development of a Strategic Plan for Recycling Market Development was called for by
the legislature of the Commonwealth in its fiscal year 1998 budget. The Chelsea Center
hired the firm of Dorn and Associates to develop the plan, in conjunction with an advisory
committee. The Plan looks at specific target materialspaper, organics, textiles,
wood, plastics, metals, glass, and tiresas well as the Commonwealths overall
approach to recycling market development. The report was completed in three phases.
Strategic Plans II and III are available in PDF format.
Phase I Report: Analysis of Massachusetts Recyclable
Materials Supply and Demand
Phase II Report: Identification of Recycling Market
Development Opportunities
Phase III Report: The Strategic Plan
